Optimizing Daily Fantasy Lineups, Part 2: Scraping Active Players

In my previous post on optimizing daily fantasy football lineups, I mentioned that I’ve run into issues in the past with selecting inactive players. This is obviously terrible. Each of these players is guaranteed zero points for the contest. In this post I’ll show how to scrape the NFL site for active players and then incorporate that information into the lineup optimizer. Scraping the NFL Player List The NFL publishes a list of current players on their site.

Optimizing Daily Fantasy Lineups, Part 1: Linear Programming

I’ve been participating in a friends-only daily fantasy football league on FanDuel since the 2016 NFL season. Knowing nothing about football and the NFL puts me at a total disadvantage, but I like to think that my knowledge of linear programming and how it can help in optimizing a daily fantasy football lineup makes up for this to some degree. Linear Programming Linear programs are mathematical problems in which we try to maximize some linear function of a set of decision variables subject to linear inequality constraints.
